His friends are scaring me

In my 5th period class, I got him a Health book and handed it to him. A girl was like "What, is she like your girlfriend now or something?" I didn't hear his answer because I was busy going back to my desk and slaming down my own health book. I avoided him all day until the end of 5th period and then stuck my tongue out at him. He stuck his tongue back out at me. However, I poked him, like I do every once in a while and he sounded kind of annoyed. I really don't want our relationship to change because of that, whatever he answered. I would ask him directly what he answered, because I'm almost positive that he said no, but the thought kind of scares me so I'm going to have to ask a guy in our 4th period what he answered, since he was right there and hopefully was listening.
My other problem. His friends kind of scare me. At lunch (like yesterday) once all the other classes were gone, it felt like they (including him) were staring me down. I mean, I know all of his friends that stare me down except for one of them and individually, they aren't so bad. I used to be really close with one of them last year--at least in 8th period. However, in a group, they terrify me. I haven't confronted him yet because I'm afraid that its just my imagination but I'm going to ask some of my friends if they think I'm right so I can at least mention it to him. Should I confront him about it? What should I do about what the girl asked?

Whenever you feel uncomfortable

you should confront him. You need to talk over any problems that come up. If you ignore them, there's very little chance they'll get solved, and they'll probably get worse and cause more problems later on. So don't ignore them.

Of course, be careful of your words. If you're scared of his friends, you need to tell him that, but you need to say it in a way that says "I'm not asking you to give up your friends for me" and "I'm not blaming you for this."

So rather than confront, which has an idea of hostility in it, I would suggest "have a conversation."
